The Basics of Metal Bending
Metal bending is a type of metalwork that is used as part of a manufacturing process using used with simple sheet metal. It produces a V-shape, U-shape, or channel shape across a straight axis. This is achieved by applying force through the application of metal bending equipment such as brake
presses and other specialised machine presses. The operation can be used to create flanges, curls and seems. Read on to find out more about the basics of metal bending and what we can offer at Fereday Cylinder.
Metal bending is a delicate process, as you must consider the thickness of the metal sheet being processed in order to successfully complete the job. Each metal has a minimum bend radius, which if exceeded will mean that the outer edge of the bend will crack. The smallest radius of any bend in a
sheet should be equal to the thickness of the sheet at the very least. We also must consider the bend orientation as any bends that originate from the same plane should also be orientated in the same direction. This avoids the need for reorienting the part later, saving you time and money. Lastly, it is worth
keeping in mind that the accuracy of the bend decreases as the thickness of the metal increases. When you discuss your requirements with us, make sure to be aware of the importance of the bend precision.

At our Midlands base, we offer two Pearson press brakes, with the choice of 250 tonnes and 125 tonnes. These machines enable us to carry out complex metal bending applications. Additionally, we have 18 sets of plate rolling machines, which means that we can work with metal in a variety of different thicknesses and widths, which will generally be from 50mm in diameter and between 0.5mm to 75mm in terms of thickness. Furthermore, we offer section rolling including angle rings, flat rings, and rolled tubes, and our tube manipulation services can work with tubes up to 76mm in diameter.
